November events frenzy sets the stage for an epic Cape Town summer
03 December 2024
As we bid farewell to a whirlwind November, Cape Town has once again proven its status as a premier events destination. In November, the Mother City hosted more than 200 unforgettable events; however the summer is just heating up.
The 206 events hosted in Cape Town this November saw around 400 000 people attending.
Bafana Bafana’s return to the Mother City attracted the biggest crowd, with approximately 53 000 attending the midweek game at DHL Stadium for the final Africa Nations Cup qualifier against South Sudan.
From the football action, the gravity defying skills of Freestyle Kings, the enduring spirit of the Ultra-Trail Cape Town athletes to the countless markets and festivals, Cape Town had something for everyone in November.
December is already brimming with excitement as the Events Permit Office is currently processing over 160 permit applications for this month.
‘This coming weekend, Cape Town is hosting 53 events and this will grow to around 115 heading to the long weekend of Reconciliation Day. Our Events Permit Office is working with event organisers and other stakeholders to ensure we maintain the health and safety standards that have brought us this far. Cape Town has proven its capabilities as a major events destination over the years and this summer, the Mother City will put that on display with the diverse lineup of events coming up this season. We invite all residents and visitors to explore these events and enjoy what Cape Town has on offer,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
This month has started off on a bright note with the City’s flagship Festive Lights Switch-On setting the tone for the start of the joyous season.
With a crowd in excess of 80 000, Capetonians and visitors welcomed the festive season with a line-up of local and national artists including Carletheia, Dr Victor & the Rasta Rebels, 3 Tons of Fun, Wynand and Chereé Strydom, MÖRDA and Mafikizolo among others.
The December calendar is an exciting showcase of everything Cape Town, from world-class festivals, cultural showcases to sporting spectacles and community-driven initiatives.
In addition to the HSBC Cape Town SVNS, taking place at DHL Stadium on Saturday and Sunday, the Mother City is also hosting Africa Games Week, the Calypso Cricket Festival and the Voice of the Cape Summer Festival among others this week.
